Who can take part?

The main summer challenge is for primary age children, there’s a mini challenge for pre-schoolers too. If you’re at school or are due to start after summer, you can do the main Challenge.

What are the important dates?

  • Register from Saturday 22nd June.
  • Finish by Saturday 24th August to complete.
  • We recommend registering by Saturday August 3rd to allow time to finish.

What do I need to do?

Visit your library to register and borrow some books to get started. If you’re not a member, you can join. It’s all free!

  • Read at least six library books over at least 3 visits to the library.
  • Read any type of book you like - chapter books, graphic novels, information books, joke books...
  • Collect a poster pack, stickers, and rewards as you go.
  • Read six books to finish to claim the big rewards.

Are there prizes?

Yes! You’ll collect rewards just for reading the things you like!

There’s stickers and pencils as you go, and at the end you’ll get a medal and certificate. You can even attend a library medal ceremony.

Completed Challenge posters can be used for free entry to Blair Drummond Safari and Adventure Park. Please see Blair Drummond Terms and Conditions.

Pssst, parents…

The Summer Reading Challenge is a great activity for your children to do in the summer – it rewards regular readers and encourages reluctant readers.

Reading stimulates imaginations, helps children to build empathy, and those who read during the summer find the transition back to reading regularly at school less difficult.
