Thirteen-year-old Luke runs away to London, far away from the abusive orphanage where he grew up in northern England. Determined to prove he can survive on his own, Luke wanders the streets of pre-war London struggling to find honest employment and a scrap of food to fill his grumbling stomach. From the shadows, he observes the close-knit community of the East End docks. Missing companionship and conversation, he longs to be welcomed as one of them. As the residents notice the gentle, young boy, they offer him the odd job, food parcel and a kind word. Can their generosity be enough for Luke who longs for a safe home, a steady job, and a family of his own?
