The battle of Culloden in 1746 remains one of the most historically important confrontations in mainland British history. Prior to the battle, the movements of Prince Charles Edward Stuart's army had created havoc within the civilian population and these marches, as Professor Bruce P. Lenman points out in his introduction, live on in history as 'an imperishable achievement of professional skill and dauntless courage'. That so many of these men were to suffer from the order issued to the Duke of Cumberland's army to 'give no quarter' is an unforgettable stain on the character of the British army. But who were these Highland followers of the Young Pretender as he fought to re-establish the Stuart monarchy on the throne of Great Britain? This muster roll, first created in the 1940s, attempts to answer that very question. First published in 1984, it was an immediate sell-out success and is now re-issued as an updated and fully revised paperback edition. Under 36 headings, all the regiments have separate prefatory notes by clan authorities and include not only the names of the men who participated in the marches but also those who were caught. Appendices list the numbers of the Prince's army who were executed or hanged after the rising and detail the probable strength and composition of the army at the battles of Prestonpans, Falkirk and Culloden. No quarter given is one of the most important reference works pertaining to the Jacobite Rising of 1745 and will prove to be an indispensable source of knowledge for any interested in the clansmen who fell in the service of Bonnie Prince Charlie.
