He drew a gun the way he lived - lightning fast and no questions asked. From out of nowhere, he rode into Jess Buckmaster's ranch yard in Canadian Crossing, Oklahoma. He was a tall man with firmly molded features and a quiet dignity that rested easily on his lean, broad shoulders - but there was also a reserved, unbending aloofness about him that was forbidding at times, like a man with secrets. He called himself Kinnard. No one in town knew him - and the way he wore his gun said most people would be smart to leave it that way. However, the local stockmen had bigger problems than the mysterious stranger. Congress had terminated all of their leases in the Indian territory, so they had to pack up everything and move out, including hundreds of heads of cattle. In desperation, Buckmaster partnered up with Kinnard to drive a trail herd to Montana.
