Set against the rolling backdrop of Scotland over two centuries, this is a family tapestry of the lives of seven generations of women. First we meet Chris and Meg in the peace of the eighteenth century Scottish Borders, before moving to the booming town of Greenock and to Christie, a customs officer's wife. Next we visit nineteenth century industrial Slamannan to find Betsy, a Church of Scotland's minister's wife, and Chrissy, married to a successful mill owner. We then move across to World War One Edinburgh to Ina and learn of her life of turmoil before finally turning north to meet Kitty in the oil rich Aberdeen of the 1960s. They are all tied with Bellwood House in Perth and with their relation, Archibald Turnbull. The story, while reflecting on these women's choices, chances, secrets, joys, regrets, hopes and dreams, also highlights the changing society in Scotland for women in those times.
