As a child in the 1920s, Winifred Foley was fascinated by the reminiscences of her Great Aunt Lizzie. Born and brought up in the Forest of Dean in the 1870s, she knew the extreme of poverty. Married to a miner, she went out to the California gold mines, returning to her beloved Forest when her husband was dying.
